“EPA’s award is a transformational investment in a longstanding priority for South Chattanooga’s isolated neighborhoods to connect to the city’s renaissance of economic opportunity and public space investment.” — Tennessee State Director of Trust for Public Land Noel Durant.

The US Environmental Protection Agency recently awarded the Tennessee office of Trust for Public Land + the City of Chattanooga nearly $20 million in funding through the Inflation Reduction Act. The funds will be used to develop a 2.6-mile urban trail system in South Chattanooga.

Called the Alton Park Connector, this project will aim to:

  • Expand the area’s green space + tree canopy
  • Create a new option for outdoor recreation
  • Improve stormwater + floodplain management (using nature-based solutions)
  • Transform + reconnect disadvantaged communities to the rest of Chattanooga

The Alton Park Connector will extend from the Riverwalk to Clifton Hills Elementary + is projected to benefit more than 1,800 residents who live within a half-mile of the trail.
Keep up with the Trust for Public Land through its website as work begins on the connector trail — you can also see other projects across the state.
