How to help those impacted by flash flooding in Chattanooga

Historic flooding on Tuesday, Aug. 12, left many Chattanoogans in crisis. Here’s how you can support them.

It’s been one week since Chattanooga experienced its second-highest rainfall on record, triggering flash floods that caused four deaths, closed multiple roads, and prompted swiftwater rescues in East Ridge, East Brainerd, and Brainerd. The floodwaters have receded — but the damage remains.

In times like these, it can be hard to know how to help. Here are a few GoFundMe fundraisers supporting some of those most affected:

  • A family of three — Tomas, Xiomara, and 3-year-old Emma — died when a tree fell on their car during the flood. Tomas’s siblings are raising money to send their remains back to Guatemala so they can be buried together.
  • An elderly woman’s home and car were severely damaged after a nearby creek overflowed. Her daughter, Emily Roe Lewis, is raising funds to help cover repairs.
  • The Anderson family’s home flooded, but because they live outside a designated flood zone, their damages aren’t covered by insurance.

Other ways to help
