Last week, we asked for your input on employment options for senior citizens and retirees, and you all came through.

You can google and find lists like this or this, but local connections and suggestions are likely to yield better results. It’s always good to get insight from real people, too. For example, in our article calling for ideas, we suggested substitute teaching — it allows for a flexible schedule + you only need a high school diploma — but we heard feedback that it’s a draining task, so keep that in mind.

“I’m retired and work at Southeastern salvage. They have been a great employer, I’m 65 years old and I know of at least four people working in the store that are older than me! You have to be able to work physically, and be dependable, every time you’re scheduled! You should check them out if you are retired, they may have a place for you! – Patricia D.

The Census Bureau is hiring thousands of people to help with the 2020 census. I’ve been told pay starts at $19.50/hour.” – Sharon A.

Bonus info: We tested out the census application, and it takes about 20 minutes to complete. It will ask you for your selective service number, which you can find here. If you speak another language or want to be a supervisor, there’s additional information to provide.

“Every year, the Lookouts (our local minor league baseball team) hire 100 or so new seasonal employees. I will be 65 this year and for the last five seasons I have worked as an usher, and several new ushers are hired every season. Also available are concession workers jobs, trolley drivers, suite servers, ticket sales and gate workers, grounds crew, etc. Active seniors can and do fill many of these jobs.” Michael D.

ProTip: For the Lookouts, the best way to get involved is to start with this application and take it to the stadium, where someone will interview you on the spot. They are looking for employees year-round.

“Goodwill has a federally funded program where citizens from 55 and over can work in various locations in the city or the location of your choice since Goodwill pays you to work there. It’s pretty awesome!!!” – Janet A.
