Spend a day completely outdoors in Chattanooga

Where to eat, play, and spend an entire day outside in the Scenic City — no need to step foot indoors.

A basket of fried pickles sits on a wooden table next to a clear glass full of beer. Over the railing of the table is a view looking down below at trees and a parking lot.

There’s nothing quite like grabbing a beer and fried pickles from The Pickle Barrel on a beautiful day.

Now that the warmer temps are here to stay (but before it gets too hot), we’re planning to get outside as much as possible.

In fact, we’ve made an itinerary for spending an entire day outdoors without having to head inside until night falls (but after attending Nightfall, of course).

Morning

Start your day by heading to one of these local coffee shops with outdoor patios. Bonus points if you choose an option where you can order without stepping inside, like Be Caffeinated (drive-thru).

From there, rent a bike via Bike Chattanooga (there’s probably a station near whichever coffee shop you choose) and head to the Riverwalk for a ride.

A wooden bridge crosses the side of a river. To the right of the bridge is water and a few houses on the banks.

This portion of the Riverwalk is located just west of Boathouse Rotisserie & Raw Bar.

Afternoon

Depending on where you end your ride, we’ve got lunch options with outdoor patios. If you park the bike at...

  • Curtain Pole Road | Walk back ~one mile for Boathouse Rotisserie & Raw Bar
  • High Street + East 2nd Street | Tony’s Pasta Shop and Trattoria
  • Springhill Suites | Scottie’s on the River
  • Blue Goose Hollow | Parkway Pourhouse | Pro tip: Stop by the bathrooms at the Blue Goose Hollow trailhead to avoid walking into an official establishment for a bathroom break. It still counts as being outdoors in our book.

After eating, spend the afternoon window shopping on Frazier Avenue or relaxing in Coolidge Park. Those who ate on the south side of the river can take a leisurely stroll over Veteran’s Bridge to get there — it’s undergone improvements for walkability during Walnut Street Bridge’s closure.

Evening

All that time outside makes you thirsty, huh? Grab a drink at one of these bars and breweries with outdoor seatingwe can’t say no to a garden cocktail at The Rosecomb.

End your day outdoors by heading to Trenton, GA to watch a movie under the stars at The Wildnerness Theater, then thank your lucky stars that you live in a region where getting outside is this easy + enjoyable.
