Meatless Impossible Whopper hits Chattanooga

Let’s skip the pleasantries + get right to it; we tried Burger King’s new vegan offering — the Impossible Whopper, and here’s what you need to know about it. ⬇️

🌱 What’s the big deal with the Impossible Whopper?

  • It’s a meatless burger made to taste like meat, unlike a lot of veggie burgers which are meant as substitutes but don’t really taste like hamburger. Burger King used its branding, adding the word Whopper.
  • Impossible Foods is the brand behind the Impossible Burger, which Burger King rolled out nationally Thursday.
  • A molecule called heme is what makes meat taste like meat + Impossible Foods uses plant-based heme made via fermentation of genetically engineered yeast to make its burgers. If you want more on the science, check out this Youtube video from Wired.

  • Chattanooga already has a couple of places to find the Impossible Burger (hey, Cashew + Fat Boy’s Roadside Eats) but the Burger King rollout is the first step toward making products like this more accessible and affordable.
  • The Impossible Whopper alone cost $5.19 at the Signal Mountain Road Burger King. A combo, with fries + drink, cost $7.29.
  • The burgers are cooked on the same grill as the regular burgers + that’s caused some discord among vegans and vegetarians, but PETA said it’s a good step regardless of whether it’s prepared separately.
