The days of the Dewey Decimal System are long gone, and now the Chattanooga Public Library is a magical place where residents can access the latest technology + newest tools (in addition to the physical books that many of us still love).
To be sure everyone knows about this evolution, local creative agency Humanaut — which also represents national brands, like Organic Valley — created the library’s first community awareness campaign that will air on local TV networks + area billboards.
Reagan Advertising donated billboard space to the library, so informational signs will span from north of Hixson to the base of Lookout Mountain. (More Reagan-related articles here + here.)
The new ad takes viewers through all the services, tools, and programs available at the downtown branch.
Cool tools, services + events
You need a library card to access these.
- Stream + download audio, e-books + music.
- Baby Bounce, Toddler Time, or Preschool Storytime will keep the kids busy.
- Tweens + teens also have access to learning programs.
- Solve a virtual escape room.
- Take a practice driving test.
- Take classes in everything from finance to writing + publishing.
- Learn a language.
- Literal tools like hammers and saws are available for loan.
- Join a book club.
- Recording studio tutorials.
- Play Dungeons and Dragons.
- Take sewing classes online.
Although it’s currently closed, the library’s 4th Floor has a ton of cool tools, including a vinyl plotter, a laser cutter, photo studio + a screenprinting and heat press.
How to get your library card
Library cards are free to Chattanooga residents. Otherwise, there’s a $50 non-resident fee.
- Submit an application.
- Provide proof of identification either online or via curbside service.
- Wait for an email with a library card number.
- Start accessing the services like the VIP you are.
Branches open for curbside pickup
Downtown, Northgate, Eastgate, and South Chattanooga branches are all open for curbside pickup only Monday-Friday 9 a.m.-6 p.m.
Public computer access and passport and local history appointments are expected to reopen next month, with the studio + 4th Floor likely opening later in the month. That would be followed by the reopening of book browsing.
Avondale is the only branch completely closed. It won’t reopen until the Youth & Family Development Centers reopen.
