Summer is right around the corner, and Chattanooga schools are sending their students off with summer reading assignments — but we’re not letting adults off the hook.

Here’s your official summer reading list, but don’t worry, they’re just suggestions + you won’t be quizzed.

“A Court of Thorns and Roses” by Sarah J. Maas
This fantasy novel is the first installment of a bestselling series that follows Feyre, a huntress who finds romance when she’s captured by an immortal faerie. This book comes at the recommendation of Chattanooga Public Library readers — it was the most-borrowed book of 2024.

“Realm Leaper” by P.E. Craven
Recommended by: Rêve Coffee and Books
This fantasy + romance novel by local author Craven follows protagonist Sage as she reclaims her memories and fights against evil forces with her new companion, Gavin. This is the first book of a series, with the third installment coming this summer.

“The Biltmore’s Mona Lisa” by Daniel D. Smith
This historical fiction novel may be set in Asheville, NC, but the author lives here in Chattanooga. The story follows a planned heist as France stores Leonardo da Vinci’s “Mona Lisa” at the Biltmore House in 1941 during WWII.

This queer, coming-of-age story is the latest novel by local author Hubbard. It follows the rebellious Zeke as he embraces his new identity and helps his school plan “Pride Speakeasies,” but drama and a mysterious crush threaten the progress.

“Haunted Chattanooga” by Jessica Penot + Amy Petulla
This scary book will prepare you to tell chilling ghost stories around your next summer bonfire. You’ll learn a thing or two about history while reading this local lore, but it’s up to you to decide if these haunted tales are fact or fiction.

“In Those Fading Stars” by Andrew Najberg
Recommended by: Rêve Coffee and Books
Read a collection of short fiction by this local author and UTC lecturer that will appeal to sci-fi and horror lovers. The stories will bend your mind while shedding light on the complexities of being human.

“Run for the Hills” by Kevin Wilson
Recommended by: The Book & Cover
The author’s latest book follows small town Tennessee farmer Madeline Hill who discovers she has a long-lost step brother. The two embark on a road trip to locate their father and share family tales along the way.

Pro tip: Keep your eyes peeled for The Reading Room, a new bar + bookstore that’s on track to open this summer.
