Bicycling Magazine named Chattanooga No. 34 on the list of the country’s 50 best bike cities.
The Scenic City is featured in the October issue, which hits stands today.
“Chattanooga boasts a multimodal-minded Department of Transportation that encourages commuters to bring their bikes aboard the historic Incline Railway, which scales the 1,700-foot-high Lookout Mountain,” according to the news release.
Chattanooga’s cycling scene has been flourishing in recent years. It’s growing in popularity for individuals, and races are bringing economic boosts.
Volkswagen USA Cycling Professional Road & Time Trial National Championships brought more than $1 million to Hamilton County.
And last month, the annual Village Volkswagen River Gorge bicycle races drew large crowds, closed downtown roads and gave businesses a boost.
In May, three national leaders came to Chattanooga to participate in meetings on how to better-connect the city with cycling routes, which would give tourists another reason to visit the Scenic City and bolster the local economy. Click here to read more about that.
“More and more, the leaders of the cities who appear on our list are understanding what Bicycling has long said: bikes are accurate and sensitive indicators of an urban area’s vibrancy and livability,” Bicycling Editor-in-Chief Bill Strickland said in a prepared statement.
